Neal Bloom launched 84 astronauts into space on $150M Rocketdyne engines while working on the Space Shuttle program. He described NASA perks. Today, Neal is SoCal lead for Hired, Inc., a software company that connects the right talent with the right opportunity. He also volunteers as an analyst at Tech Coast Angels – San Diego. As a board member of Startup San Diego, he is helping to scale the most impactful convener and catalyst of startup activity in the region.

As co-founder of hip-hop label, Raptivism Records, in the late 1990’s, Ashok Kamal’s first album “No More Prisons” provided insight, reflection, and socio-political commentary on the national prison system. He went on the start other businesses dealing with social issues. Today, he is Executive Director of Tech Coast Angels – San Diego.

Ashok Kamal is Executive Director of Tech Coast Angels – San Diego. As an entrepreneur, Ashok founded Raptivism Records, a hip hop label and also Green Business Bureau, an online green business certification program for small and medium-sized businesses. As an angel, Ashok has invested in 3 companies, including Outsite, which is a network of co-living & co-working properties in beautiful places. Ashok’s latest venture, the School of Rap, is a platform to empower youth through creative freestyle. In his spare time he loves learning to surf, discovering weird vegetarian food and playing fantasy baseball.

Ep7: Dean Rosenberg (Venture SD) Started 3 companies, which one exited? Co.X (VC $32M), Co.Y (Angel $4M), or Co.Z (Self-Funded $0.25M)?

Decades before Dean’s venture was acquired by a public company in 2014,  he was a scrappy 2nd yr comp sci major at UCSD. He saw a posting on the job board, asking for students with experience. He applied, saying that he was a programming  expert, would take the job at a fixed price, and would not take any payment until he delivered the code.  After signing that first contract, he went and bought a book to learn how to be an expert for that project!!

Dean Rosenberg is CEO of Venture San Diego and on the Board of Tech Coast Angels – San Diego. Previously, Dean was the founder/CEO of AIRSIS, Inc. whose core offering is PortVision, a global ship tracking service with over 2,000 users including federal and state agencies and every major oil company. AIRSIS was acquired in 2014 by Oceaneering International, that’s OII on the NYSE. As CEO of AIRSIS, Dean also raised $2M, over two rounds of funding, led by TCA.

Fun fact: while at Columbia Business School, Mindy evaluated companies for potential investment by Barbara Corcoran for ABC’s Shark Tank. Previously, Mindy worked at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals and Merrill Lynch equity research and has experience across varied areas of the pharmaceutical industry including investment valuation, company strategy & analytics, product management, & marketing.

Michele (Yoshioka) Maley is an Account Manager at ScoreStream, which is a communication platform that allows fans to share information around sporting events with their family and friends. She is also a Volunteer Analyst at Tech Coast Angels – San Diego. Michele was previously Director of Programs & Operations at EvoNexus, which is San Diego’s premier technology incubator.
